Marci
The Little Engineer
English Translation Copyright (C) Nebulus, 1995
Marci is a smart kid. He's interested in tinkering and tampering, once he
catches hold of a screwdriver, it's hard to set it free. He has already
started studying the mysteries of electronics. Apparently he inherited
this feature from his father, but this is not the only similarity between
the two of them. What he picked from my purse right away was my phone card
that happened to be one out of the UNICEF series, showing the photo of a
cute little girl with tanned skin. We winked at each other with his dad...
his mom, however, seemed to have a slight frown in her eyes as she noticed
us. Later I managed to swap the phone card for two train tickets.
Getting acquainted with Marci was not an easy job, although he has a
pretty good personality. On the other hand, this was the first time we met
- that could've happened much earlier, but the circumstances, well,
everything can be blamed on the circumstances... All in all, Marci is not
particularly happy about strangers, that's understandable. I'm not sure
how I'd handle the situation where I'm supposed to be friends with a
monster three times taller and ten times heavier than me... So I was
trying to make it easier to Marci and wasn't hanging around him too much
in the beginning. The strategy worked so later he gave us a chance to
reveal the mysteries of my student ID together.
Obviously Marci doesn't like to sit around too much, for him everything is
a challenge or mystery to be discovered. All this made him tired later,
and went to bed after a short "fight". Before doing so, however, he
figured out the relationship between the switch and the lamp that wasn't
actually an easy issue due to the utterly lousy mechanical condition of
the switch.
After Marci had left us, his parents and me were having a little chat
about the present and the future, although we, old fellows, had darker
opinions about these questions. Some months will pass until Marci would
also decide to join us. He'll have questions. Many questions continuously.
And we will realize again that we don't know anything...
But now I say a quiet good-bye and don't even hide my marvel of the
dozing, seventeen month old Marci.
Marci: Nickname of Ma'rton (Hungarian version of the masculine name Martin)
